SFMA and FMS movement assessments in Richardson.

The pain is usually not where the problem is. A structured movement screen is how we find out, before anyone writes you a treatment plan. This is cause-first, made literal.

Pain that keeps coming back Answers before treatment Talk to a Specialist

What It Is

Where it hurts is rarely where it started.

You’ve been told to rest it. Stretch it. Strengthen it. Stop doing the thing you love. Each one helps for a few weeks and then the same pain finds you again. That’s what it looks like when treatment is aimed at the symptom, and it isn’t your fault for following the advice you were given.

SFMA, the Selective Functional Movement Assessment, and FMS, the Functional Movement Screen, are structured systems for grading how you actually move. We take you through set patterns, score mobility, stability, and control, then break down the ones that fail until we can tell whether the limitation is tissue that won’t move or a nervous system that won’t let it.

That is what turns cause-first from a slogan into a procedure. A knee that hurts because the hip above it stopped rotating is a hip problem wearing a knee costume, and no amount of knee work will settle it. Larry Hernandez and Erica Magana are both SFMA and FMS certified, and the screen is unhurried, with time to explain every finding out loud.

Questions, Answered

The screen, straight answers.

FMS screens overall movement quality and injury risk, and it’s built for people who aren’t currently in pain. SFMA is built for movement that hurts or isn’t working, and it breaks each painful pattern down until the real limitation shows itself. We choose the one your situation calls for. Larry Hernandez and Erica Magana are certified in both.

No. Anyone with pain, stiffness, or an injury that keeps returning gets the same thing out of it, and most of what we find has nothing to do with sport. Standing up from a low chair, carrying a toddler on one hip all evening, sleeping without your shoulder waking you at two in the morning: those are movement patterns too, and they get graded the same way.

It’s the front end of treatment, not a separate product you buy first. The screen decides what we treat and in what order, and the plan follows straight from it. In Texas, direct access lets you see a licensed physical therapist for up to 30 days without a physician referral, so nothing is standing between you and an answer. Beyond 30 days, a referral is required. You’re one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit.
