IASTM in Richardson.

Old surgical scars and years of overuse leave tissue thick and stuck. A contoured tool finds that restriction, frees it, then we retrain the movement the same visit.

What It Is

A tool that finds what fingers miss.

IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. A contoured tool glides over the skin, along the muscle and the fascia. Where the tissue is thickened or bound down, the tool catches. That is it finding the restriction before it treats it.

Those restrictions have a history. An old surgical scar. A tendon that has been irritated for years. A band of tissue that thickened because you kept training through something and told yourself it would settle. Hands can feel a lot of that. A tool applies more precise pressure to a smaller area, which is what dense, stubborn tissue tends to need.

Freeing the tissue is step one and never the whole treatment. In the same visit we follow it with stretching, joint mobilization, and corrective exercise, because range you don’t use goes back to being range you don’t have. That is the difference between a temporary loosening and a plan with an endpoint, run one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit.

Questions, Answered

IASTM, no mystery.

You may feel mild discomfort while the tool works through an adhesion, and some temporary soreness afterward is normal as the tissue settles. It is firm, it is brief, and the pressure is matched to you the whole time. IASTM is also not right for everyone: if you have a blood clotting disorder, an active infection, or severe osteoporosis, we screen for that at your evaluation before anything touches your skin.

Not as a standalone treat, no. Freeing tissue without retraining the movement gives you range you will not keep, so IASTM is paired with stretching, joint mobilization, and corrective exercise in the same visit. It is a widely used, evidence-based technique in rehab, and we reach for it when your assessment points to a real restriction rather than by default. How many sessions you need comes out of that assessment and gets set with you, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit.

Coverage for IASTM varies by plan, and some plans do not cover it at all, so we check before you start rather than after. We work with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and United Healthcare. Call us and we will verify your specific plan before your first visit, at (972) 526-5693.
