Focused vs. Radial Shockwave Therapy In Richardson

Before booking a shockwave appointment at On Point Movement & Performance, it helps to understand that “shockwave therapy” actually covers two genuinely different technologies, not one single treatment.

Two Different Tools for Two Different Jobs

“Shockwave therapy” gets used as one blanket term across the industry, but focused and radial shockwave are meaningfully different technologies under the hood, and mixing them up leads to a lot of confusion about what to actually expect from treatment. Both are used regularly at our Richardson clinic, just for different situations depending on the depth, size, and location of what we’re treating.

How Focused Shockwave Therapy Works

Focused shockwave concentrates its energy at a precise depth and location beneath the skin, which makes it the better choice for deeper structures like the Achilles tendon in Achilles tendinopathy, or an actual calcium deposit in a case of shoulder calcific tendinitis. Because the energy converges on a specific target point rather than spreading out, it’s also generally more precise for smaller, well-defined problem areas that need targeted treatment.

How Radial Shockwave Therapy Works

Radial shockwave, by contrast, disperses its energy outward from the point of contact, covering a broader and more superficial area rather than concentrating at depth. It tends to be the better fit for conditions like tennis elbow or plantar fasciitis, where the affected tissue spans a wider surface area closer to the skin rather than sitting deep within a joint.

Quick Comparison

  • Focused shockwave: deeper penetration, precise targeting, used for calcific deposits and deep tendon structures
  • Radial shockwave: broader coverage, more superficial reach, used for widespread or surface-level tendon pain
  • Combination approach: some cases benefit from using both types across a treatment plan

As a Pickleball coach, the treatments have been essential to keeping me on the court Erika and Larry are great. Some of the best services I received for the shockwave treatment for my calf and foot pain as well as the cupping sessions and rehab rehabilitation. They are very knowledgeable

Larry and Erica worked on strengthening my shoulder. I did not even realize how bad it had gotten until I started building it up with their focused approach. Within weeks, I had more mobility and am able to use my shoulder fully without pain! Highly suggest!

How We Decide Which One You Need

The decision comes down to the depth, size, and specific location of the affected tissue, which our providers assess carefully during your initial evaluation rather than defaulting to one type across the board. Some conditions, particularly broader tendinopathy cases that involve both deep and surface-level tissue changes, sometimes benefit from a combination of focused and radial treatment within the same overall plan.

Neither type is objectively “better” in isolation. The right choice depends entirely on what’s actually going on with your specific injury, which is why an accurate evaluation matters more than the technology itself.

What This Means for Your Treatment Plan

If you’re not sure which type of shockwave therapy fits your particular situation, that’s exactly what your first visit is for. Our team will assess your condition, determine the depth and nature of the affected tissue, and recommend whichever approach, or combination of approaches, gives you the best shot at real results. Request an appointment at our Richardson clinic and we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect before starting anything.
